we don't want to speak english. it's scary. In finland we don't have many opportunities to speak other languages and that's why we are very shy to use for example engliss.
I usually speak english only school in english lessons and you can see it :D

i strongly disagree. u have plenty of opportunities to speak english in finland.

I have discuss with my class and finally we thought that we have not many opportunities. Only place is school where we can use english. Of course in work we can speak (MAYBE!) english but it's not so in common.

who stops u from going to an irish bar and starting up the conversation in english? =)

here where I live, we don't have an irish bar :D And if I go to a bar they think that I am crazy :D I'm not good in speaking and they would notice that I'm finish :D

u do know what the answer then is? always say ur from sweden :D

Of course not. From Germany

and if u are planning on staying in finland longer i would suggest that u invest on language courses. ur life will be so much easier. in the long run u'll get frustrated if u can't cope in everyday life with finnish.

 Yulia, I think it's because the Finns usually look like that, without meaning that. We are usually not social and outgoing as people in most countries. Looking angry doesn't always mean we are angry. Basically all the Finns learn English at school but many are shy to use it. Compared to many cultures the Finnish behavior may be seen as rude but it's just the way we are used to.

Make effort, go to chat with other mums, say that you'd like to have friends and invite them for a coffee. Trying to speak at least some words of Finnish makes impression to most and may smooth the beginning.

Does your husband has any friends who has wifes with children at home? Maybe you could contact them and see over a coffee or something?

Good luck and hope you'll get friends soon!

Hey, do you know where I could find a pen-friend from abroad? I wanna learn more english :) Anyone?

wouldn't msn or skype be more up to date? try facebook :D

yes yes, i think maybe e-mail friends :D but not facebook and i con't have skype :D

my opinion is that email is passive. in IM u have to react faster, so u don't have time to think what u write. and before u notice, it comes naturally.
facebook and all its apps at the moment is a good way to meet people around the world.
