I'm 26 years old and moved to Finland 2 years ago. Can you tell me one thing: Cause my finish-language sucks, I usually speak english (english is not my mother-language) when we are in playground for example. I feel that many mothers avoid me and seem like "please, don't speek us". I feel lonely here in Kirkonummi, my husband is working so much.

So, why they behaver like that? Is it my english ( my english is not good either) or is it their english??

As you know, Finnish people are generally very shy. (And my English is very bad too) Maybe they are afraid of their "bad" English. Many Finnish people don't speak other languages because they think that they can't. Only thing I can say is be patient and try to make contact. ?

we don't want to speak english. it's scary. In finland we don't have many opportunities to speak other languages and that's why we are very shy to use for example engliss.
I usually speak english only school in english lessons and you can see it :D

Finnish people are shy to speak foren languages :) we learn english at scool so moust fins can speek but wount because they think that you shall laugh at them :)
Best thing to do is to go to finnish laugage course.

English is mother-language mutta not good either...hmmm :D

English is NOT my mother-language, or why did you laught??

Sorryyyyyyyy!! Just noticed :ashamed:
Anyway, I just came to Finland with my man originally from Venezuela, and it's been REALLY hard for my family to make conversation with him, because they are SO shy to use english!!! Maybe that's the reason =)

i would suggest that u go to a finnish language course for immigrants. there u'll meet plenty of other people in ur situation :)
learn a bit finnish and it's easier to make contact.

I think it must be a mixture of finish culture and the language barrier. I've got many friends from abroad who visited me in Finland and I noticed, unfortunately, that we finns are quite shy people. Compared to many other countries, English is quite widely spoken in Finland but the problem is that people dont trust themselves! ('cause I've seen many finns who claimed that they dont speak any English but got busted when they were drunk and completely capable to speak it!)

And another thing is our culture. We are quite reserved people but once we get to know with a person, it's different. So try to find a nice person and speak with her/him little by little, once you build the trust you should be fine!

wish you luck!

it can be both, you speaking english, and finnish people don´t speak good english..
bad thing for you is deffenetly, that you live in the middle of nowhere, so it can be difficult for you to make contacts with other moms.
in kirkkonummi there´s a bit little circles, if you know what i mean, in helsinki or vantaa or espoo might be better to make good contacts quicly.
but don´t worry, when you just are nice and try to talk and show that you are ok, i´m sure it will all be allright soon :)

I have discuss with my class and finally we thought that we have not many opportunities. Only place is school where we can use english. Of course in work we can speak (MAYBE!) english but it's not so in common.

Their English. I never use English and can't discuss in English. I can even like some mother very much but just can't speak with her. I'm sorry.

But you english is better than mine..?? I think..

Maybe written language. NOT spoken. My reading comprehensive is quite good too (I can read books in English easily) but listening comprehensive is quite bad. Oral skills are the worst just because I don't speak English

Have you tried this? http://www.dialang.org/ There you can find out your knowledge of language.

here where I live, we don't have an irish bar :D And if I go to a bar they think that I am crazy :D I'm not good in speaking and they would notice that I'm finish :D

and also, if you want specifically a finnish friend, not another immigrant, then try to find someone who is interested in speaking languages. I'm sure there are many finns who enjoy speaking English!

Oh, you can speak finish very well! Just practise and you will learn so much more! And you can go and say some mother Mitä kuuluu and then you can say that you speak english. Maybe it would make situation more relaxing.
